Opinion

Governing the flow of ideas is a pretty big task. Sometimes our opinions are formed only because of the options we happened to think of. Help us stretch our thought groove by answering the following question:

What's the hottest scripture for our time?

By "hottest", I mean a scripture that speaks with particular relevance to us in our slice of history right now. Disclaimer: they're all powerful (please, no posts by zealous/angry Christians looking to call us/me/everyone the devil). Maybe just pick one of particular impact to you.

  • Our time? gotta be 3:16 man.

It is even in wrestling. It is pop culture baby.

  • “If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property." - Exodus 21:20-21 (NIV)

What I like about this verse is that most people I have spoken to disagree with it. Most people, at least in Western society, believe that slavery is wrong, slaves are not the property of their owners, and that beating slaves is unthinkable. How then can God be commanding this thing that is so morally repugnant to us?

Too often in our society today you see people simply following the party line without turning on their own brains, especially around issues of morality. This verse excites me because it is an example of scripture that I believe we should reject. That is we have to engage our own brains and think about what this verse is saying and what is going on. Thinking for ourselves is a wonderful thing, and it should be encouraged and fostered, not squelched by "You're with us, or you're (evil, unchristian, unamerican, etc)", stupidity.

  • John 10:10
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full".

We've been brain-washed into thinking that success means social standing and more and more materialistic things. Too many people are killing themselves & destroying their purpose trying to get it all - and they don't realize that they'll never be satisfied.

    We've missed the boat.

Our fullness of life and true satisfaction can only be realized through Jesus Christ.
